Wedge Tomb

Town Walls

This wedge tomb is situated near the top of a small valley. The slow climb up the hillside offers spectacular views of Bantry Bay. The monument is comprised of a single roofstone resting on what appears to be two long sidestones. On closer inspection you will see there are two overlapping stones in line with the sidestone on the northside, indicating that the gallery may have extended to the west. The chamber is 1.5 metres wide at the west end and only 1 metre wide at the east end, the height of the chamber also decreases at the east end, giving the monument its familiar wedge shape. It is believed the tomb has a mid-winter sunset alignment. Leitrim Beg is less than 800 metres east of here.
